What have I done?
Turns out I never intentionally set out to do create any of this. I was just a lowly writer trying to add depth to his book and characters. I needed to find a way to bring another level of depth and complexity to the world I was creating.
I have always known Tarot to exist, and I have always been fascinated by the inner workings of Tarot and how it affects lives. So I figured, "I bet I could use Tarot". But being a creative writer I felt it necessary to change it slightly to make it appear as though this world was not connected in any way with the world we all live in.
Once I began to delve into the concept of changing certain names, certain meanings, I found that I wasn't imagining anything... it was flowing out of me like I already knew all of the pieces of the puzzle, I was just putting them together. The names, the meanings, the pictures and symbols, the entire setup of this new system poured from my mind to hand to paper as a waterfall has no control over the direction the water flows.
When I was done, I knew I had accomplished more than create a work-around for character development. I realized that in the process of bringing my world to life I had taken an earnest look at myself, my past, my present, and my future, and I couldn't help but see, through these cards, how everything connected.
The best way to describe it is like watching a storm. Most times you are only able to see the flash of lightning, a blanket sheet of white light that covers the sky. You know that it's precipitated by storm clouds and creates thunder. Using these cards, it's as if seeing every streak of lightning clearly like the branches on a budding tree. Truly seeing all of the colors and paths it takes... it's a different experience altogether than the blanket sheet of dull light. And once you see those brilliant streaks, once you understand that you've been looking at life without the full picture, how can you go back? How could you be satisfied walking through life in a haze?
The truth is, I didn't set out to reinvent the wheel, and some might be offended or outraged because you can't just take something that's been around hundreds of years and turn it on it's head, but that's what I did. You cannot change what has already been done. You can only seek to understand how and why it came about, and how it affects you and shapes the world you live in. And for those against this concept, I'm truly sorry for having offended, but then again I'm not, because Tarot had to have been created by someone to begin with and whose to say it is the only system. There is no wrong way to seek enlightenment for yourself, and if these cards help bring clarity to someone then that's the only thing that matters.
